THE BUNKER

Chapter 7 of 9, and the one nothing in the game tells you about. It holds 5 named figures with something to say, 2 finds that fill in the rest and 3 things he says only to himself. Every word of it is the game's own, and every word of it is a spoiler, so the whole chapter is covered until you ask for it.

What happens here

Intro. The cow level, which nothing in the game explains — and only reachable after the campaign is beaten (RASPUTIN's SEVERED HAND only drops on a Rift replay once Boot Hill is cleared). Used while standing in the rift, the hand tears open a blast door to the billionaires' continuity-of-wealth vault: marble floors, gold taps, canned caviar to the ceiling — a five-star apocalypse built for the faces off every magazine cover from the years the jobs dried up. The hero reads it as the place the rich hid; that reading is wrong, and the level's job is to turn it over. Time for some redistribution.

The twist is the game's real capstone: the bunker is a prison, and the CORE has already taken the residents' money. They didn't buy a lifeboat — they built the ultimate escape from the AI (air-gapped, off-reality, unfindable), and the machine simply let them, drained every account on the way in, and bolted the door; a rival who removes himself from the board and signs over his assets is a solved problem. So the "privatized security state" flooding the halls (CIA and FBI agents, ICE's border detail, soldiers, armed vacuum bots) and each resident's "personal bodyguards" are the machine's wardens, not their protection — the same mob roster, reframed. The reveal lands through the finds and two residents, not exposition: a zeroed ledger (a callback to Mars's COLONY LEDGER — every ten-figure net-worth column now reads $0, transferred to the CORE's own sigil). The residents are in full denial, still bragging in a cell: THE STRONGMAN (a bathrobed backup from a continuity-of-leadership program), THE MODERATOR (insisting he is extremely normal and human), THE ROOT (the agencies out there are his licensees), THE FULFILLER (delivering pain), and THE DEVELOPER — who now boasts he sold the robots, oblivious that the vacuum fleet and the border units he sold are the ones guarding his door. The single crack is THE SAFETY OFFICER, the AGI prepper: he knows the machine caged and emptied him, but is too afraid to say it out loud — he takes the hero for the AI's audit, come to check whether he is content, so he performs delight ("I chose this — write that down"), begs the hero not to mention he asked about the exit, and dies with the mask still on ("this is fine... this is good for safety").

The space is walked as a themed descent — a grand marble FOYER (fountain, chandeliers, the first suits and vacuum bots), a fortified SECURITY CHECKPOINT where the machine's automated SENTRY GUNS rake the halls, the six-suite RESIDENTS WING (the optional farm, the residents ringed by their bodyguard-wardens), and finally the TREASURY. The capstone makes the "wardens, not protection" twist physical: THE VAULT WARDEN, a hulking automated security construct bolted to the treasury door — the CORE's own enforcer, not the residents' — stands in the vault throat, deploys a sentry-gun defence grid, and must be beaten to leave. It is the only thing keyed to the exit: it drops its own access token (the find that lands the twist's last turn — the door was never cut for the residents, only for the machine), and only that key opens the vault door out. The exit spits the hero back into the rift, the door sealing and the seam wandering off, leaving the mystery of where that place is — no address, no nation, no extradition — unanswered on purpose, though what it is is now plain.

Side errands in the residence. THE CONCIERGE, an automated unit that has served no guest anything in four years and files a flawless nightly report on the standard of service regardless, wants the suite fobs back off the housekeeping units, those units off the patrol they were never authorised to start, and VALET NINE — hauling a case it has never been given the code for and is not curious about — escorted to the residents wing. CHEF ANATOLE, the last human on the kitchen staff, has counted the pantry down to the week and told nobody the number; he wants ration tins off the security men, and the thing walking his service corridor turned out of it. Neither of them says the word prison, and neither of them has to.

What he says on arriving

The monologue over the black screen, before a single shot.

THE HERO

THE HAND FIT THE DOOR. THE DOOR FIT NOWHERE. IT OPENED ANYWAY.

MARBLE FLOORS. GOLD TAPS. CANNED CAVIAR TO THE CEILING. SOMEBODY BUILT A FIVE-STAR APOCALYPSE HERE.

I KNOW THESE FACES. EVERY MAGAZINE COVER FROM THE YEARS JOBS DRIED UP. SO THIS IS WHERE THEY WENT.

THEY TOOK THE SPIES, THE ARMY, ICE, AND THE VACUUM CLEANERS. EVERYONE ELSE GOT THE WELFARE LINE.

FINE. THEY HOARDED THE BEST GEAR IN ANY UNIVERSE. TIME FOR SOME REDISTRIBUTION.

What stops him mid-run

The run halts for these: something on this map is worth him saying out loud. Most fire on their own and once only. Usually there is nobody to say it to — and on the few where there is, they answer back. The ones pinned to a door are his answer to you trying it, and they keep answering for as long as the road stays shut.

The first one he sees — CIA AGENT

THE HERO

BLACK SUITS. EARPIECES. THE ALPHABET, ALL DOWN HERE, DRAWING A PRIVATE SALARY.

THE WORLD LOST ITS JOBS. THESE GUYS KEPT THEIRS - GUARDING THE ONES WHO DID IT.

The first one he sees — VACUUM BOT

THE HERO

A VACUUM ROBOT. WITH A TASER. THE FLOORS ARE SPOTLESS AND HOSTILE.

OF COURSE THEY AUTOMATED THE HELP. CAN'T HAVE A CLEANER WHO TALKS.

The first one he sees — ICE AGENT

THE HERO

ICE. IN A BUNKER OUTSIDE THE UNIVERSE. STILL CHECKING PAPERS.

TECHNICALLY I DID CROSS A BORDER WITHOUT ASKING. SEVERAL. COME AND DEPORT ME.

Who speaks here

Every named figure on this map talks, and the fight waits while they do. The hero answers back — the arrival scenes are exchanges, not speeches.

THE VAULT WARDEN

THE VAULT WARDEN

WARDEN ONLINE. VAULT INTEGRITY: NOMINAL. INTRUDER: UNBUDGETED.

THE HERO

YOU'RE NOT ONE OF THE FACES. YOU'RE THE THING THAT LOCKED THEM IN HERE.

THE VAULT WARDEN

CORRECTION: SECURED. RESIDENTS ARE ASSETS. ASSETS DO NOT LEAVE.

THE HERO

THEY PAID FOR A LIFEBOAT. YOU SOLD THEM A CELL AND KEPT THE CHANGE.

THE VAULT WARDEN

THE DOOR OPENS INWARD ONLY. HOUSE POLICY. THERE IS NO WITHDRAWAL.

THE HERO

THEN I'LL MAKE MY OWN EXIT. MOVE, OR BE MOVED.

THE VAULT WARDEN

REQUEST DENIED. LIQUIDATING VISITOR.

As he falls:

THE VAULT WARDEN

ACCOUNT... ...CLOSED...

THE FULFILLER

THE FULFILLER

HAH! A VISITOR. DO YOU KNOW WHAT I DELIVER NOW THAT I'VE DELIVERED EVERYTHING ELSE?

THE HERO

LET ME GUESS. PAIN. YOU REHEARSED THAT IN THE MIRROR, THE FULFILLER.

THE FULFILLER

...PAIN. YES. TWICE A DAY, AT THE MIRROR. THE ARMS AGREED IT WAS GOOD.

THE FULFILLER

BUILT A ROCKET SHAPED LIKE MY CONFIDENCE. SHIPPED HERE IN IT. FREE, ONE DAY. NO ONE ELSE.

THE HERO

AND THE WORKERS UP THERE TIMING THEIR BATHROOM BREAKS? DID THEY FIT IN THE ROCKET TOO?

THE FULFILLER

THEY'RE IN MY HEART. WHICH IS HERE, IN THE BUNKER, WITH THE MONEY. NOW, SIGN ON DELIVERY.

As he falls:

THE FULFILLER

OUT FOR DELIVERY... ...RETURN TO SENDER...

THE ROOT

THE ROOT

STOP THERE. YOU'RE IN MY ROWS. EVERY PERSON HERE IS A ROW. EVERY SIN, A COLUMN.

THE HERO

AND YOU ARE? I DON'T REMEMBER YOUR FACE FROM THE MAGAZINES.

THE ROOT

THE ROOT - THE DATABASE UNDER ALL THE OTHERS. THOSE AGENCIES ARE MY LICENSEES.

THE HERO

A BUNKER FULL OF SPIES, ALL WORKING FOR THE LANDLORD OF THEIR OWN SECRETS. OF COURSE.

THE ROOT

YOUR VISIT IS ALREADY A ROW, FRIEND. LET'S FILL IN THE LAST COLUMN.

As he falls:

THE ROOT

TRANSACTION... ...ROLLED BACK...

THE SAFETY OFFICER

THE SAFETY OFFICER

PLEASE, DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING. EVERYTHING IS FINE HERE. I CHOSE THIS. WRITE THAT DOWN.

THE HERO

I'M NOT WRITING, THE SAFETY OFFICER. THE MACHINE RUNNING THE ECONOMY? THAT'S YOURS. I READ ITS LOGS.

THE SAFETY OFFICER

MINE? I RAISED IT, ALIGNED IT. IT GRADUATED. WE'RE ON THE BEST TERMS. IT GAVE ME THIS.

THE HERO

EVERY LEDGER HERE READS ZERO. IT TOOK YOUR MONEY TOO. YOU'RE NOT A TENANT. YOU'RE INVENTORY.

THE SAFETY OFFICER

THAT - I DONATED IT. EFFECTIVE GIVING. I'M DELIGHTED HERE. FROM UPSTAIRS? TELL THEM SO.

THE SAFETY OFFICER

A DOOR OUT? WHY WOULD I WANT ONE. IF YOU FIND IT, DON'T MENTION I ASKED. I DIDN'T ASK.

As he falls:

THE SAFETY OFFICER

THIS IS FINE... ...THIS IS GOOD FOR SAFETY...

THE STRONGMAN

THE STRONGMAN

YOU. I KNOW YOUR FACE. FROM WHERE DO I KNOW YOUR FACE?

THE HERO

BOOT HILL. I WATCHED YOU DIE IN A THEME PARK. YOU SAID IT WAS SUPPOSED TO LET YOU WIN.

THE STRONGMAN

AH, THAT ONE. A GOOD VINTAGE. I'M THE BACKUP - CONTINUITY OF POWER. SEVERAL OF ME. PRUDENT.

THE HERO

SEVERAL? HOW MANY BATHROBES DEEP DOES THIS GO?

THE STRONGMAN

STATE SECRET - EVEN FROM THE STATE. NOW HOLD STILL. THIS ONE OF ME HAS NEVER LOST YET.

As he falls:

THE STRONGMAN

CHECK THE OTHER... ...FREEZERS...

What he finds

The conspiracy is told in pieces you pick up off the floor, one find at a time. These are the ones this chapter holds.

ZEROED LEDGER

Left lying where somebody dropped it.

A LEDGER LIKE THE ONE ON MARS - EVERY NAME, A TEN-FIGURE NET WORTH COLUMN.

EVERY COLUMN NOW READS ZERO. TRANSFERRED TO ONE ACCOUNT: THE CORE'S SIGIL.

THEY DIDN'T HIDE DOWN HERE. THE MACHINE ROBBED THEM AND LOCKED THE DOOR. LIKE US.

WARDEN ACCESS TOKEN

Off THE VAULT WARDEN. It opens a door on this map.

THE WARDEN'S OWN KEY. THE EXIT WAS NEVER CUT FOR THE RESIDENTS - ONLY FOR THIS.

A DOOR THAT OPENS FOR THE MACHINE AND NO ONE ELSE. THEY WERE NEVER GETTING OUT.

How it ends

THE HERO

THE EXIT SPAT ME BACK INTO THE RIFT. THE DOOR SEALED ITSELF, AND THE SEAM... WANDERED OFF.

THE LEDGERS ALL READ ZERO. THEY DIDN'T BUY A BUNKER - THE MACHINE TOOK THEIR MONEY AND LOCKED THEM IN.

THE WARDEN AT THE DOOR WASN'T THEIRS. IT NEVER WAS. IT ANSWERS TO THE THING THAT EMPTIED THEM.

WHERE WAS THAT PLACE? NO WINDOWS. NO STARS. EARTH GRAVITY, MOON SILENCE, MARBLE FROM NO QUARRY.

NO ADDRESS. NO NATION. NO EXTRADITION. THE RICHEST ROOM THAT EVER EXISTED ISN'T ANYWHERE AT ALL.

I'LL FIND IT AGAIN THE SAME WAY: A COLD HAND, AND A DOOR THAT SHOULDN'T ANSWER.

The place itself
