WHAT THE TITHE IS WORTH

WHAT THE TITHE IS WORTH, an errand in Ada's Trail

WHAT THE TITHE IS WORTH is an errand LEDGER UNIT 12 hands out on MARS, and it wants ASSESSOR'S SEAL sold across the trader's counter and 1 BOUND SIGNATURE brought back.

Every part of it counts: the errand is not done, and cannot be handed in, until all of them are.

It is not offered cold: THE MAN WHO SIGNED has to be handed in first — and being a campaign chain, that may well have been on another venue entirely, to somebody else.

The colony's book will not close without a countersignature from the party every transfer went to, and that party signs in a way no colony machine can produce. One can be bought — but the trader will not sell to a man who has never seen the seal it copies, and the only seal on Mars is worn by an assessor who takes it off for nobody who has not first proved it wrong.

  • BOUND SIGNATURENothing on the map carries one and none is lying about: this piece is bought, over the wandering merchant's counter, and only once he has a reason to put it out.
  • ONLY WHILE IT IS LIVEthe pieces exist for the errand and nothing else — they drop once it has been accepted and the tally is still short, and they are handed over at the turn-in.
  • CAMPAIGNThis errand belongs to the hero rather than to the run. Its progress is carried between venues and survives leaving the map, its chain crosses the whole campaign, and anything a conversation told you along the way still counts two venues later. It is tracked per difficulty, so a fresh rung starts the chain again.

At the trader

This errand runs through the wandering merchant, and the order is the point. He will not put the piece it wants on his counter until you have sold him ASSESSOR'S SEAL — he has to know you have seen one. Both rows appear under ERRANDS at his stall, and only while the errand is running.

What it pays

Handing it in pays experience, 300 coins and 1 rolled piece.

The experience is authored as a SHARE of your own level bar — 0.35 of one — rather than as a figure, so the same errand is worth the same fraction of a level on the first map and the last. The table below is what that comes to for a hero at the level this venue is tuned for; take it later and it pays more.

The rolled piece goes through the ordinary drop pipeline at your own level, with 1 tier of skew on the rarity roll — the same skew the merchant's stall takes. A quest is a second CALLER of the loot system, never a second loot system, so what it hands over is the same kind of thing a monster drops.

The chain

Comes after THE MAN WHO SIGNED.

Opens A PAGE OF SOMEBODY.

A chain never crosses a map or a run: the quest log belongs to the run you are in rather than to the hero, so every link of one is taken, done and handed in on a single visit, from the same person.
